About Clear Self Tax

Free calculators for people who earn 1099 or other self-employment income, built so every number can be traced to the rule that produced it.

What this site is

Clear Self Tax estimates federal self-employment tax, federal income tax and state income tax on freelance income, and turns the total into the quarterly payment to set aside. The calculators run entirely in your browser; nothing you type is sent to a server. Every rate, threshold and deduction comes from a dated data file that names its official source, and each page shows whether that file has been verified against the source yet.

Who maintains it

The site is built and maintained by Tallyvane, an independent developer and publisher who publishes under that name. Tallyvane is not a CPA, enrolled agent or attorney, and the site does not claim professional review it has not had. What it offers instead is traceability: the calculations follow the published instructions for the federal and state forms, the methodology page spells out exactly which rules are applied, which are simplified and which are left out, and every figure is pinned by an automated test so it cannot change unnoticed.

How the numbers are checked

Each data file is read twice, independently, from the primary documents — revenue procedures, form instructions, statutes — and marked verified only when both reads agree. A third pass then recomputes returns by hand from the agency's own tables and tries to make the calculator disagree with them. The audits have found real errors, and those are listed openly on the corrections page rather than quietly fixed. The full rules are in the editorial policy. What it is not

It is not tax advice and does not know your full situation. Itemized deductions, S-corporation elections, local income taxes and credits beyond the child tax credit, the earned income credit and the state credits each page names are outside its scope. Treat the result as a planning estimate and confirm it with a professional or the official forms before you file or make a payment.

How it is funded

The site is intended to be supported by advertising, and may later include affiliate links to accounting, bookkeeping or tax-filing services. Neither is running yet: there are no ads and no affiliate links on the site today. If you buy through such a link, the site may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
